Leão listed in Portugal’s No. 7 shirt after Ronaldo leaves camp

Published 1 October 2026

Portugal’s official squad list for its UEFA Nations League match against Denmark assigns Rafael Leão the No. 7 shirt previously worn by Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the national team’s training camp on Wednesday. The listing confirms the change for the Denmark match; it does not establish that Leão will keep the number permanently. UEFA’s matchday squad list names Leão as No. 7 and Fábio Silva as No. 17, the number Leão had been assigned for the international window. The list is the basis for the shirt-number change, rather than confirmation of a broader decision about Portugal’s future squad numbering. Ronaldo said on social media that he decided to leave camp after the national-team coach’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. He said he would explain his reasons later, without giving a date for that explanation. The circumstances behind his departure therefore remain unresolved. Coach Jorge Jesus said there had been no incident between him and Ronaldo. Jesus also said a player may be unhappy after warming up for 20 or 30 minutes without being brought into a match.
