L Murugan seeks exit from government for BJP work in Tamil Nadu

Published 13 October 2026

L Murugan said on October 13 that he had asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to relieve him of his ministerial responsibilities and allow him to relinquish his Rajya Sabha membership, so he could focus on strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections. Murugan, a minister of state who held portfolios in Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, said he had written to Modi requesting both steps. The reports do not establish whether either request has been formally accepted or completed. He said he wanted to return to Tamil Nadu and work for the party at the grassroots. Murugan cited the 2029 election as a goal and said Modi’s recent visit to the state had strengthened his resolve to devote more time to party work there. He also said he hoped to meet residents and BJP workers across the state and help the party improve its performance in Tamil Nadu. In his letter, Murugan described his five years in the Union government as an honour and thanked Modi for the opportunity to serve.
