Kenya Reports No New Ebola Cases in 293 Tests
Kenya reported no additional Ebola infections in testing announced October 11, as health officials continued tracing people who may have been exposed to the country’s first imported case. The Ministry of Health said 293 samples from 289 alerts had been tested, with only the imported case positive. The ministry said 108 of 122 identified contacts were in quarantine and being monitored, and none had developed symptoms as of October 11. Tracing of the remaining contacts was ongoing. The figures were included in a ministry statement; they do not establish whether further contacts have since been located or assessed. The patient, who had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo through Uganda, died in Nairobi after testing positive, according to health authorities. Kenya confirmed the imported case on October 6. The ministry said the patient arrived at Nairobi Hospital on October 3 with symptoms and was isolated before the positive test. Accounts attributed to the Kenyan and Ugandan health ministries said he was not flagged during airport screening.
