Kennedy Says 2028 Presidential Bid Is Conditional

Published 4 October 2026

Sen. John Kennedy said he would consider running for president in 2028 if he felt he could no longer be effective in the Senate or believed the Republican field included a candidate he could outperform. The Louisiana Republican said his current plan is to seek reelection to the Senate, and he has not decided whether to pursue the presidency. Kennedy made the remarks Sunday, October 4, during an appearance on Meet the Press. Asked whether he was thinking about a presidential campaign, he said he would consider one under those conditions, while emphasizing that reelection is his focus. His comments described a possibility, not a campaign announcement or a commitment to run. He also declined to assess how he might fare against Vice President JD Vance, another potential Republican candidate. Kennedy said he was not ready to discuss another contender. The interview did not establish whether Vance or other Republicans will enter the race. Kennedy’s remarks leave open how he would weigh the Senate and presidential contests if his stated conditions arose. He is in his second Senate term and is due to face reelection in 2028, the same year as the next presidential election.
