Trump renews $5,000 pledge if Republicans win Congress

Published 4 October 2026

President Donald Trump has renewed a promise to pay $5,000 to every adult U.S. citizen if Republicans win control of both the House and Senate in the November 2026 midterm elections. The proposed payment remains a pledge: the sources report no approved funding or legislation, and no eligibility rules or payment schedule have been specified. In a video posted to Truth Social on Saturday, October 3, Trump tied the payment to Republican victories in both chambers. He said the government could afford it through tariff revenue and what he described as economic success. He also warned that a Democratic win would bring an economic depression comparable to the 1929 crash. That forecast was his assertion; he did not provide economic analysis in the reported remarks to substantiate it. Trump put the cost of the proposed payments at about $1 trillion and claimed the United States had attracted $21 trillion in investment over the previous 15 months. Both figures were presented by Trump. Investment commitments are not, by themselves, federal revenue available for distributing checks, and the sources do not establish a funding plan for the proposal.
