Kelsea Ballerini Defends Stella Lefty Opry Debut

Country singer Kelsea Ballerini has publicly defended newcomer Stella Lefty following backlash Lefty received after her debut at the Grand Ole Opry. The controversy arose after the Opry shared a video on Instagram of Lefty performing her hit song "Boston" backstage with two young patients from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The video prompted negative comments from some online critics, who accused Lefty of being an "industry plant" or "nepo baby" due to her father, Eric Lefkofsky, cofounder of Groupon and CEO of a biotech company. Others criticized her use of Noah Kahan's "Stick Season" in her song and questioned her legitimacy at the Nashville institution. Ballerini, an Opry member since 2019, responded to the criticism in the comments section of the Opry's post. She emphasized that the Opry is a place for honoring legacies but also for celebrating new artists from diverse backgrounds who connect with audiences. "From different backgrounds and hometowns and generations, we can find ways to say and sing things that resonate with people that fill the seatsand that is always the goal, right?" Ballerini wrote.
