Judge preserves White House access for three outlets

Published 14 October 2026

A federal judge on October 13 barred the Trump administration from enforcing its decision to revoke White House press credentials for journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico while their lawsuit proceeds, preserving the reporters’ access during the case. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly issued a preliminary injunction that extends an earlier temporary order restoring the outlets’ hard-pass credentials. The ruling found the organizations likely to succeed on claims that the revocations violated due-process protections and the First Amendment. It is not a final decision on the lawsuit. Kelly’s order applies to the administration’s September 18 decision to revoke the credentials. The outlets sued on September 21, arguing that the White House acted without adequate notice or process and because it objected to their reporting. An earlier temporary order had restored their access as the judge considered the case; the preliminary injunction keeps that protection in place during the litigation, unless an appeals court lifts it.
