Judge extends White House access for three news outlets
A federal judge extended an order requiring the White House to allow CNN, MS NOW and Politico journalists onto its grounds while he considers whether to maintain their access during a lawsuit over President Donald Trump’s ban. The temporary protection now runs through Tuesday, October 13, when U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly expects to rule on the outlets’ request for a preliminary injunction, possibly sooner. Kelly extended the order at a hearing on Thursday, October 8, after the initial temporary restraining order was set to expire. He did not decide whether to grant the longer-term injunction. The outlets are seeking protection from renewed restrictions as their case proceeds. The organizations sued after the White House revoked their reporters’ credentials. On September 24, Kelly ordered access restored, finding that the outlets were likely to succeed on their claim that the administration had denied them due process by imposing restrictions without adequate advance notice. That ruling addressed the process used to revoke access; the broader constitutional dispute remains unresolved.
