Jon Watts Reportedly Attached to Direct Star Wars Trilogy

Jon Watts is attached to direct the first film in a planned Star Wars trilogy written by Simon Kinberg, according to reporting cited by several accounts. Lucasfilm has not publicly confirmed the selection, and the project remains in development without a greenlight from Disney, so the reported attachment does not mean the film is approved for production. The trilogy is intended to continue the Skywalker Saga after 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Reports say Daisy Ridley is expected to appear as Rey in some capacity, but details of the story and the roles of other characters have not been disclosed. The films are separate from another early-stage Star Wars project focused primarily on Rey, which is being developed by director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Kinberg began working on the trilogy in 2024. He has written several X-Men films and co-created the animated Star Wars series Rebels. Watts previously co-created Skeleton Crew, a Star Wars series released in 2024, and directed two of its episodes. He is also known for directing three Spider-Man films starring Tom Holland. The reported development comes as Lucasfilm prepares other theatrical releases.
