James Gunn Defends DC’s Upcoming Clayface Film
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn defended the studio’s upcoming Clayface film after a Threads user questioned why the relatively little-known Batman character was getting a movie, saying the project began with writers’ interest in the character rather than a public demand for familiar intellectual property. Gunn responded by naming films including Back to the Future, Casablanca, Pan’s Labyrinth and The Matrix, then argued that Hollywood does not make films only by asking audiences which established properties they want to see again. He said Mike Flanagan, James Watkins and Hossein Amini were inspired by Clayface and developed a story around the character. Gunn described that creative impulse as preferable to a screenplay written without passion for a more popular character. The exchange centered on the premise of making a film about a villain whose ability to alter his appearance is less familiar to general audiences than that of DC’s best-known heroes. Clayface is scheduled to open in theaters on October 23, 2026. Reports published October 7 said tickets had gone on sale, though the central development was Gunn’s defense of the project online.
