IndiGo flight diverted after device smoke onboard
IndiGo flight 6E 6115 was diverted to Hyderabad on October 11 after smoke was detected from a passenger’s personal electronic device, the airline said. The aircraft landed safely, and IndiGo arranged another plane to carry passengers onward to Chennai. No injuries were reported in accounts of the incident. The flight was operating from Delhi to Chennai when the smoke was detected. IndiGo said cabin crew brought the situation under control and pilots diverted the aircraft in line with established safety protocols. The aircraft landed at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. Video described in reports shows smoke and flames in an overhead compartment, with passengers trying to contain them. News accounts identified the device as a power bank, but IndiGo’s statement referred only to a personal electronic device. The available footage does not establish what caused the smoke or flames, or whether the device was charging. IndiGo said an alternate aircraft had been arranged for passengers continuing to Chennai. The airline also said it was offering refreshments and updates while seeking to reduce disruption, and apologized for the inconvenience.
