India's 7.8% Q1 GDP Growth Makes It Fastest-Growing Major Economy
India has recorded a robust economic expansion of 7.8 percent in the first quarter of the fiscal year 2026-27, positioning it as the world's fastest-growing major economy amidst global economic turbulence. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the figures on Thursday, September 3, 2026, highlighting the nation's economic resilience and attributing the growth to sustained reform efforts and strategic government policies. Sitharaman made these remarks while addressing investors at a high-level business roundtable in New York, organized by the Consulate General of India in association with Bank of America. She had arrived in the city following her participation in the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting held in Asheville, North Carolina. During her visit, Sitharaman also met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on the sidelines of the G20 gathering in Asheville on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Discussions focused on the global economic outlook, India's growth trajectory, and the need for international economic assessments to accurately reflect structural transformations in emerging markets.
