Imran Khan Given October 28 Deadline to Leave India
Mumbai Police say they have issued actor Imran Khan a Leave India Notice directing him to leave India by October 28, following his participation in a protest in Mumbai. Police cited his participation despite not being an Indian citizen, according to a statement reported on October 15. The notice is an administrative direction, not a final determination that Khan broke immigration or Overseas Citizen of India rules. Khan attended the October 10 demonstration at August Kranti Maidan, where protesters called for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign. The gathering was held in support of the Cockroach Janta Party and raised objections to the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Police detained Khan during the protest and released him later that evening, reports say. Khan holds US citizenship and an OCI card, which does not confer Indian citizenship. He said he attended as an individual and a Mumbai resident, not as a representative of an organisation. The police statement cited his non-Indian citizenship and participation in the demonstration as the basis for the notice.
