Hundreds Mourn Officers Killed in A66 Crash

Hundreds of police officers from across the United Kingdom gathered in Hartlepool to pay tribute at the funeral of Pc Matthew Blades, who died in a collision on the A66. Standard bearers representing every UK police force attended the service at St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church for Pc Blades, 37, and his colleague Pc Tom Clough, 38. Both officers were killed on August 22 near South Bank, Middlesbrough, when their marked armed response vehicle was struck by a Volkswagen Passat. Five young men also died in the incident. The funeral featured a full police ceremonial display, including officers on horseback, pipers, and a drummer playing "Amazing Grace" as the coffin, draped in a Union Flag, was brought into the church. Emergency service representatives and senior police figures, including Cleveland Police Chief Constable Victoria Fuller, were present. Policing minister Sarah Jones and Home Office minister Anna Turley also attended, while Prime Minister Andy Burnham paid tribute in the House of Commons, acknowledging the officers' service and sending sympathies to those gathered.
