Houthi Advances Prompt Diplomatic Appeals to Iran

Houthi forces have seized critical territory along Yemen's Red Sea coast, including the port of Mocha and Perim Island, gaining control of approaches to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key maritime chokepoint for global shipping and energy supplies. The rapid advance has prompted Saudi Arabia to appeal to China for help in reining in the Iran-backed group, with China subsequently making a private request to Tehran to use its influence to prevent the conflict from spreading. The Houthi military campaign, which escalated in early September, has seen the group capture strategic locations along the coast, threatening Saudi oil exports and shipping routes. In response, Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes, while the Houthis have conducted cross-border drone and missile attacks. On September 8, Houthi missiles and drones struck oil facilities and utilities across four southern Saudi cities, igniting fires and wounding 73 people, according to the Saudi Energy Ministry. Diplomatic efforts have intensified amid the fighting.
