Houthi drone debris kills 1 in Saudi Arabia amid regional tensions

Debris from an intercepted Houthi drone killed one person and injured two others in the western Saudi city of Taif on Thursday, marking the first death inside Saudi Arabia since the latest escalation in Yemen's conflict. Saudi civil defense officials reported that a Yemeni national was killed, while a Saudi woman and a Pakistani national were injured, with the Pakistani in critical condition. The falling fragments also caused material damage to buildings and vehicles. The incident occurred amid heightened regional tensions. Saudi Arabia had stated a day earlier that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed a drone allegedly launched by the Houthis toward Mecca, Islam's holiest city. The Houthi movement denied responsibility for the alleged Mecca attack, with its leader, Abdul Malik al-Houthi, calling the accusation an "utterly heinous lie" and calling for mass protests. The United Arab Emirates condemned the alleged attempt to target Mecca, calling it a violation of Saudi sovereignty and a threat to regional security. Iran's Foreign Ministry stated that a claim of intercepting a drone should not be used to escalate tensions or accuse any specific party.
