Hong Kong trial opens in Abby Choi murder case

Published 2 October 2026

The murder trial of Abby Choi’s ex-husband and two former in-laws opened in Hong Kong on September 30, with prosecutors alleging that the three men jointly planned her killing over a dispute involving money and a luxury apartment. The defendants have pleaded not guilty to murder, and the allegations remain for a nine-person jury to assess. Prosecutor Charlotte Draycott told the court that Alex Kwong, his father Kwong Kau and brother Anthony Kwong acted together to kill Choi in February 2023. Draycott described money as the root cause and alleged that Kwong Kau made a plan with his sons. The prosecution’s account has yet to be tested through the trial evidence. According to Draycott, Choi’s relationship with her former in-laws deteriorated in 2022 as she sought to sell an apartment registered under Kwong Kau’s name. Prosecutors said Choi had allowed the former in-laws to live there and that they helped care for her children. Kwong Kau eventually agreed to sign a document allowing the sale, the prosecution said, but could move back into the apartment if Choi died.
