Larry Nassar Removed From Michigan Offender Registry
Larry Nassar has been removed from Michigan’s sex-offender registry after the state Supreme Court ruled that 2021 amendments to the registration law cannot be applied retroactively to offenses committed before July 1, 2011, the Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed. The ruling also led to the removal of more than 20,000 names from the state database, according to reports, though the total and the registry’s count before the change were not consistently specified. The court issued its ruling on September 9. It addressed whether the 2021 changes to Michigan’s Sex Offenders Registration Act could impose registration requirements for earlier conduct. The court determined they could not be applied to offenses predating the July 1, 2011, cutoff, prompting the Michigan State Police to remove affected people from the registry. The Eaton County Prosecutor’s Office said Nassar’s conduct occurred before the cutoff, even though his convictions came years later. For purposes of the registry change, the date of the conduct, rather than the date of conviction, determined whether the amended requirements applied. The office confirmed that Nassar was among those removed.
