Greek singer Mazonakis dies at 54 after cardiac arrest

Published 10 September 2026

Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis, one of the most popular performers of the past three decades, died on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at the age of 54 after suffering a cardiac arrest at a private medical practice in the Kolonaki district of central Athens. He had gone to the facility for a scheduled plasmapheresis, a specialised procedure that removes blood plasma, when he became unwell. According to Greece's National Emergency Aid Centre, clinic staff called the emergency line after the singer went into cardiac arrest. A motorcycle paramedic reached the scene at around 4:26pm local time and began CPR before Mazonakis was transferred by ambulance to Elpis Hospital. The hospital said he arrived without spontaneous breathing and without a pulse, and that resuscitation efforts carried out under protocol failed. He was pronounced dead at 5:40pm. The circumstances of his death have become the subject of an official investigation.
