Grand Canyon Flash Flood Evacuates 60, Alters Landscape

A major flash flood at Grand Canyon National Park on Saturday afternoon forced the evacuation of more than 60 people and significantly altered the landscape, sending debris into the Colorado River and prompting searches for potentially missing hikers. The National Park Service said the flooding began at Bright Angel Creek around 2:30 p.m. on August 29, 2026, after intense rainfall in the area. Torrents of water washed out footbridges over the creek and carried large boulders, metal structures, and other debris into the Colorado River. A metal building was reported washed into the river, and gauges along the waterway spiked by as much as 9 feet as the runoff surged through the canyon.
