Glacial Collapse Triggers Deadly Floods in Nepal and Tibet

A catastrophic glacial collapse near the Nepal-China border triggered massive flash floods on August 26, 2026, killing at least 270 people and leaving more than 1,500 missing across both countries, including hundreds of foreign tourists. The disaster, which sent a wall of mud, ice, and rock cascading down the Bhote Koshi River valley, devastated communities in Nepal's Rasuwa district and parts of Tibet, washing away homes, bridges, and highways. The event began when a large portion of a glacier detached at an elevation of about 5,200 meters, crashing onto the valley floor roughly 1,200 meters below.
