Georgia Oakley’s Sense and Sensibility centers sisterhood

Published 14 October 2026

Georgia Oakley’s new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility places the relationship between sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood at the center of a restrained, naturalistic period drama. The film stars Daisy Edgar-Jones as Elinor and Esmé Creed-Miles as Marianne, and is scheduled to open in theaters on October 16, 2026. The story follows the sisters as they navigate love, family responsibilities and the restrictions facing women in their society. Elinor is more reserved and practical, while Marianne is more openly emotional. The adaptation gives their bond a central role as they respond to heartbreak and learn from one another. Oakley said she wanted to capture the emotions she remembered from reading the novel as a teenager and to make the sisters’ relationship the story’s heart. The film was shot on location in England, including the countryside and coast of Devon and Dorset. Its muted costumes, loose hairstyles and minimal makeup contribute to an intentionally lived-in look, in contrast with the polished presentation often associated with period dramas.
