Gambhir backs Gill, cites support from Rohit and Kohli

India coach Gautam Gambhir has backed Shubman Gill’s captaincy, saying the young ODI skipper can draw on the experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for support on and off the field. Gambhir said Gill had handled demanding decisions well despite a difficult period for India in the format, and expressed hope that results would improve. Speaking to JioStar, Gambhir said having the two senior batters alongside him could help Gill navigate the responsibilities of leading India. He also emphasized the importance of keeping emotions in check, particularly for a young captain facing pressure. Gambhir’s comments come as Rohit and Kohli return to India’s squad for a three-match home ODI series against the West Indies, scheduled to begin September 27. Gambhir also addressed the challenge of selection decisions, including leaving established players out of the playing XI. He said Gill had managed that aspect of captaincy well so far. The coach described the captain as having done the right things during a tough stretch and said he believed the results could turn around.
