FRRO Directs Imran Khan to Leave India by October 28

Published 15 October 2026

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office has directed Imran Khan, a US citizen and Overseas Citizen of India cardholder, to leave India by October 28, 2026, after he attended a protest in Mumbai. The notice sets a departure deadline; it is not, by itself, a finding that Khan committed a crime or violated immigration conditions. Khan was among people detained at August Kranti Maidan on October 10 during a demonstration calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. The protest also supported a demonstration associated with the Cockroach Janta Party. The FRRO issued its notice after Mumbai Police received a complaint from Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged Khan’s participation breached rules governing OCI cardholders or foreign nationals. Somaiya has sought police action, including Khan’s arrest and deportation, and said he supplied material about the actor’s protest speech and earlier comments. Those allegations have not been established as a finding by authorities in the reported information. Mumbai Police said Khan received a copy of the notice and that further administrative procedures were underway.
