Flash Floods Hit Nepal-Tibet Border, Hundreds Missing

Published 26 August 2026

A devastating flash flood and landslides struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, leaving hundreds of people missing and prompting a large-scale rescue operation. The disaster, which began in the morning, has cut communications and power, hampering efforts to contact those unaccounted for. The Nepali tourism board released a provisional list of 384 missing travellers, including 391 foreigners and 93 Nepalis in one version of the register. Among the missing are 12 British citizens, including a 13-year-old girl, who were part of a tour group with the company Alpine Eco Trek. The company confirmed the group was scheduled to cross the border that morning.
