FBI Investigates ShinyHunters’ Alleged Data Theft

The FBI is investigating unauthorized activity affecting FBIJobs.gov after the cybercrime group ShinyHunters claimed it stole sensitive data tied to bureau employees and applicants. The bureau has acknowledged possible exposure of employee personally identifiable information but has not confirmed how many people or records were affected, what the full dataset contains, or how the access occurred. ShinyHunters provided reporters with a sample of about 5,000 records and claimed its larger cache includes information on as many as 60,000 current and former FBI personnel. That estimate is unverified and covers a different population from the bureau’s roughly 38,000 current employees. The FBI has not confirmed the group’s claimed total or its assertions that it reached particular systems. Some records supplied by the group include sensitive medical and personnel information. Journalists reported matching details in portions of the material, including Social Security numbers checked against credit bureau data and an evaluation date consistent with a former analyst’s employment history.
