Published 15 October 2026

The Election Commission of India has ordered a Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls in 17 states and Union Territories, setting January 1, 2027, as the qualifying date for the exercise. The revision is intended to add eligible voters, including young and first-time electors, and correct existing entries ahead of elections due in several states next year. The Commission’s order sets November 12, 2026, for publication of draft rolls. Voters may file claims and objections through December 11, and final rolls are scheduled for January 4, 2027. The Commission has also set December 28 as the deadline for officials to complete disposing of claims and objections. The areas covered are Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal. The Commission directed electoral authorities in those states and territories to carry out the revision under Section 21 of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. The exercise is distinct from the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR.
