Published 7 October 2026

Delhi Police registered a case naming Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Congress leaders and workers over alleged assaults on police and obstruction during an October 7 opposition protest in New Delhi, police sources said. Police said they are examining the allegations and the roles of those involved; the reports do not establish that the alleged assaults or obstruction occurred. The protest was organized by INDIA bloc lawmakers opposing the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Police stopped the group as it travelled toward Jantar Mantar, where the opposition intended to demonstrate. After being prevented from continuing, protesters staged a sit-in nearby, and police detained Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other participants. Officials said the two Congress leaders were released shortly after 8 p.m. Rahul Gandhi was taken to Barakhamba Road Police Station, while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other leaders were taken to Chhatrasal Stadium. Police said 91 people, including MPs and other leaders, were detained during the protest.
