David Fair, the co-founder of the influential DIY rock band Half Japanese, died on August 29, 2026, at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by his family and friends, with tributes pouring in from across the music world for the artist known for his rule-breaking approach to creativity. Fair's daughter, Harper, announced his passing in a statement shared on his Facebook page. "It is with a heavy heart that I announce that my father, David Fair, passed away on August 29th, 2026. He lived a beautiful life of love, kindness, and creativity," she wrote. She added that he had been reunited with "the love of his life Pam." Producer and friend Don Fleming provided further details, stating that Fair died peacefully shortly after his daughter toasted him with a root beer float. Fleming described Fair as "the sweetest guy, with a great sense of humor" and "a pure artist and musician, all from the heart." He also noted that Fair had been undergoing cancer treatment for the past couple of years. The musician's brother and bandmate, Jad Fair, confirmed the death to Rolling Stone.
