Coinbase urges early planning for Bitcoin quantum security
Coinbase is urging Bitcoin developers to begin preparing for quantum-resistant security before a quantum computer capable of breaking the network’s cryptography is demonstrated, warning that technical changes and the migration of wallets could take years. The company outlined its recommendations in a technical paper published October 13, while emphasizing that it has not selected a final design or set a migration deadline. The paper treats the threat as a future possibility, not a current breach: it does not claim that a quantum computer can break Bitcoin today. A sufficiently capable machine could theoretically derive private keys from exposed public keys and enable unauthorized spending, but the supplied reporting describes no such machine as currently existing. Coinbase argues that preparation must address more than choosing a new signature algorithm. Any transition would need to protect exposed and newly created funds, fit within Bitcoin’s limited block space, allow full nodes to verify transactions, and work for both ordinary wallets and institutional custody systems.
