Chargers Reportedly Have Not Discussed Trading Herbert

Published 14 October 2026

The Los Angeles Chargers have not discussed trading quarterback Justin Herbert and, according to a team representative cited by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, would not do so, despite their 0-5 start and public speculation about a possible deal. The report came after NFL analyst Nick Wright proposed on The Herd that the Chargers consider sending Herbert to the New York Jets in exchange for three first-round picks. Wright said the team’s roster was not close enough to championship contention, while acknowledging Herbert might not want to leave Los Angeles. His suggestion was commentary, not a report of negotiations or an offer from either team. Schefter said he asked someone with the Chargers about the idea after hearing it raised by a league executive. The team representative, as Schefter recounted the exchange, said the organization had never discussed trading Herbert. The account was repeated in several reports, all based on Schefter’s description of the conversation, rather than separate public statements from the Chargers. Los Angeles is winless through five games. Its most recent loss was a 23-17 defeat to the Denver Broncos in Week 5. Herbert has completed 59.
