Payton to Take Larger Playcalling Role for Broncos
Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton is expected to take a larger role in offensive playcalling for the team’s Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, while offensive coordinator Davis Webb is expected to remain involved in game planning and on game day. Reports differ on whether Payton will direct most or all of the plays or share responsibility more evenly with Webb. Adam Schefter reported that Denver planned a more collaborative approach, with Payton’s role increasing and Webb retaining significant responsibilities. Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo likewise reported that Payton would be more heavily involved and Webb would remain a major voice. Separately, Mike Florio said he had confirmed Payton would call plays again, while former Broncos receiver Brandon Stokley reported that Payton could take over the majority, if not all, of the playcalling. The accounts establish a reported shift toward greater involvement by Payton, but do not settle how the duties will be divided during the game. No direct Broncos announcement specifying who will call most or all plays was included in the reports.
