CBS and Tony Romo End Nine-Year Broadcasting Partnership

Published 2 October 2026

CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to end his nine-year run as the network’s lead NFL game analyst, the parties said Friday. J.J. Watt, who has filled in since Romo went on leave, will remain alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson on CBS’s lead broadcast team for the rest of the season. The network has not announced a permanent successor. Romo said he plans to take a break and focus on his health and family before pursuing another opportunity. In a statement, he said he was proud of his work at CBS and grateful for the support he received during his tenure. CBS thanked Romo for his contributions over the past nine years and wished him well. The departure follows Romo’s July arrest in Wisconsin on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. He pleaded no contest in September to a first-offense OWI civil offense, according to the reports. Sources differ on whether the plea was entered September 1 or September 2, so the exact date is not clear from the available information. Romo previously said multiple back surgeries and dependence on pain medication contributed to an overreliance on alcohol. He described the incident as a personal failure and said he took responsibility.
