Canadian cybersecurity executive arrested on extortion charges

Published 10 October 2026

Edward Dubrovsky, a Canadian cybersecurity executive, was arrested in Pennsylvania on federal conspiracy and extortion-related charges, according to court records. He was later transferred to the Eastern District of Texas, where he remains in custody pending a detention hearing. Dubrovsky’s arrest comes amid an FBI investigation into the ShinyHunters hacking group and a breach of the bureau’s online jobs portal. FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of an unnamed suspected ShinyHunters coconspirator but did not identify Dubrovsky or publicly confirm that he was the person arrested in that investigation. The court docket lists charges alleging conspiracy to threaten the confidentiality of information to extort money and conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act extortion. The underlying complaint is sealed, and the specific conduct prosecutors allege against Dubrovsky has not been made public. Court records show he appeared in federal court in Pennsylvania before the case was transferred to Texas. People familiar with the investigation, cited in reporting, believe Dubrovsky is tied to the jobs-portal hack. That alleged connection has not been publicly detailed by the FBI.
