Canada Threatens to Cut Off Electricity to U.S. Amid Trade War

Published 24 August 2026

Ontario Premier Doug Ford escalated his rhetoric against President Donald Trump on Monday, August 24, 2026, threatening to cut off electricity and critical minerals to the United States as the trade war between the two countries intensifies. Ford’s comments came after the U.S. imposed 50 percent tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods on Saturday, August 22, and after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation set to begin on September 8. In an interview with the Associated Press, Ford declared that “everything is on the table” if the dispute worsens, including the possibility of halting electricity exports and shipments of critical minerals from Ontario.
