Edo Assembly Impeaches Agbebaku, Rejects Resignation

Members of the Edo State House of Assembly formally impeached former Speaker Blessing Agbebaku on Monday, August 24, 2026, rejecting his earlier resignation and converting it into a removal from office. The action took place during a plenary session in Benin, where lawmakers voted to impeach Agbebaku, who had stepped down as speaker on August 17 amid allegations of an impending impeachment plot. The impeachment was announced by the new speaker, Yekini Idiaye, who stated that 17 of the 24 assembly members had signed an impeachment notice. The notice was presented by Majority Leader Sunday Ojezele, who moved the motion for impeachment.
