Canada marks fifth Truth and Reconciliation Day

Communities across Canada are marking the fifth National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 with planned ceremonies, cultural programming and public observances honoring residential-school survivors and children who never returned home. Event listings describe activities in Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary and Prince Albert, though most local reports outline plans rather than confirm which events took place. The national observance includes a 90-minute Remembering the Children ceremony scheduled for Parliament Hill. The program is set to feature speeches by residential-school survivors, elders and Indigenous leaders, as well as performances by Tia Wood, Soleil Launière, Silla and Adrian Sutherland. Organizers have invited participants to bring children’s shoes to place near the stage in remembrance. The event is being hosted by CBC/Radio-Canada, APTN and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. The day, also known as Orange Shirt Day, is intended to recognize the legacy and continuing effects of the residential-school system.
