NYC Unveils $7.4 Million Antisemitism Strategy

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a strategy Tuesday to combat antisemitism, allocating $7.4 million for prevention, survivor support and security while declining to adopt a single definition of antisemitism. The plan outlines education and public-awareness efforts alongside support for Jewish cultural institutions and religious sites. The strategy assigns $6.4 million to community organizations working on hate prevention and survivor support, and $1 million to improve security at synagogues and other houses of worship. The allocations are the first portion of a previously announced $26 million increase for the city’s Office for the Prevention of Hate Crimes. The city says the strategy will expand Holocaust education, including eighth-grade visits to the Museum of Jewish Heritage, and promote awareness of Jewish history and how to report discrimination. It also includes campaigns highlighting Jewish contributions to New York City and investments in Jewish cultural institutions. On the question of a definition, the administration says existing city and state laws give agencies the tools to assess possible hate crimes and discrimination case by case.
