Buffy Stars Reunite at Emmys, Reference Canceled Reboot

Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited on stage at the 2026 Primetime Emmy Awards, presenting the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. The ceremony took place on September 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. The pair, who starred as Buffy Summers and Angel in the cult classic series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," used their appearance to reference the show's legacy and a recently canceled revival project. During their presentation, the actors engaged in a playful exchange that alluded to the end of a planned reboot. After Gellar described the show's premise, Boreanaz remarked, "You know, Sarah, I always thought Buffy and Angel would end up together." Gellar responded, "Well, I guess we won't find out," a line widely interpreted as a nod to the cancellation of the Hulu series "New Sunnydale." The reboot, which was to be directed by Chloé Zhao from a script by Nora and Lilla Zuckerman, did not move forward earlier this year. In a March 2026 interview, Gellar had stated the project was canceled because an executive was "not a fan" of the original series.
