Blizzard Announces New Open-World StarCraft Shooter for 2030
Blizzard Entertainment has announced a new StarCraft game, marking the franchise's first major installment in over a decade. The title, simply called StarCraft, is described as an open-world, story-driven sci-fi shooter, representing a significant genre shift for the series historically known for its real-time strategy gameplay. The announcement was made during the opening ceremony at BlizzCon 2026 on Saturday, September 12, 2026. The game is scheduled for release in 2030. A cinematic trailer was shown, but no gameplay footage was revealed. The new StarCraft is set in the Koprulu Sector, 70 years after the events of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void. The project is being led by Dan Hay, a veteran game developer known for his work on the Far Cry series at Ubisoft. Hay joined Blizzard in 2022. The cinematic trailer depicted a Dominion Marine recruit named Holt training for combat against the Zerg Swarm. The sequence showed soldiers suiting up and deploying to a battlefield, where Holt's weapon jams and he is killed, emphasizing the brutal nature of the conflict.
