BJP wins West Bengal by-elections in Nandigram, Rejinagar

Bharatiya Janata Party candidates won the West Bengal Assembly by-elections in Nandigram and Rejinagar, with reported results showing substantial margins over their nearest rivals. The victories came in constituencies with different political histories and followed polling on October 6 and counting on October 9. In Nandigram, Hasi Rani Rath was reported to have received 164,427 votes, defeating Congress candidate Milan Pradhan, who received 41,674. The figures, cited as Election Commission of India data in reports, give Rath a margin of 122,753 votes. Rath’s result was reported after earlier counting updates had shown her leading by smaller margins as rounds were completed. BJP candidate Shankharavh Sarkar won Rejinagar, according to declared results cited in reporting. Sarkar received 129,914 votes, while Aam Janata Unnayan Party candidate Golam Nabi Azad received 54,098, a margin of 75,816. Congress candidate Abdullahil Kafi and Trinamool Congress candidate Rabiul Alam Chowdhury were among the other candidates in the constituency.
