JNU Dismisses Congress MP After Harassment Inquiry

Published 9 October 2026

Jawaharlal Nehru University dismissed Congress MP and professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from university service with immediate effect on October 9, following an internal inquiry into sexual harassment allegations made by students. The university’s order, signed by Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit, said its Internal Committee investigated the allegations and recommended major punishment. JNU said it considered the committee’s report and available facts before imposing dismissal. The order cited university service rules and Rule 11(ix) of the Central Civil Services Classification, Control and Appeal Rules. The decision establishes the university’s disciplinary action. The order, as described in the supplied reports, does not reproduce the committee’s findings or reasoning in full. Reports said 11 students complained about Akoijam. They alleged that he made sexually suggestive remarks, including during classes and viva examinations, and offered higher marks in exchange for sexual favours. Other allegations concerned sexual advances and conduct at gatherings at his campus residence.
