BBC shelves planned Archers studio in Birmingham
The BBC has shelved plans to build a dedicated recording studio for The Archers at its new Tea Factory headquarters in Digbeth, Birmingham, saying it is assessing other options as part of a drive to reduce costs. The decision leaves the programme’s future recording location undecided, although its production team is still due to move to the site in early 2028. The BBC said it is considering existing studio facilities around the UK and external studio options in the West Midlands. It said the aim is to find a more cost-effective arrangement while maintaining the radio serial’s production standards. The broadcaster has not announced where the cast will record. The Tea Factory plan had included a purpose-built studio for the long-running BBC Radio 4 drama. The production team is currently based at the Mailbox in Birmingham and is expected to move to the new Digbeth premises as planned. That move does not settle whether recording itself will remain in the city. The Archers has been recorded in Birmingham throughout its 75-year history. First broadcast on January 1, 1951, the programme is set in the fictional West Midlands village of Ambridge.
