Bardem Says He Proposed Silva’s Sexual Interest in Bond
Javier Bardem said he proposed making Raoul Silva’s interest in James Bond personal and sexual while developing the villain for Skyfall, and that director Sam Mendes was open to the idea. Bardem recounted the story during a BFI London Film Festival appearance, describing how the suggestion shaped the film’s interrogation scene between Silva and Bond, played by Daniel Craig. In the scene, Silva has Bond tied to a chair and touches and unbuttons his clothing while the two exchange suggestive lines. Bardem said he wanted to give the villain a motive beyond his efforts to destroy the world: an attraction to Bond. He credited Mendes with welcoming the proposal during their reading of the material. Bardem said Mendes told him he would take the idea to the studio. Bardem later praised the studio as “very brave” for allowing the approach. The account of that consultation and approval comes from Bardem; the material provided no separate statement from the studio about its decision-making. Bardem said the scene remains memorable because it placed Bond in a situation he had not faced before, and because of how the character responds.
