AWS Acquires DuckLabs, Maker of Open-Source DuckDB
Amazon Web Services has reached an agreement to acquire DuckLabs, the Amsterdam-based company behind the popular open-source analytical database DuckDB. The deal, announced on August 26, 2026, will see the roughly 30-person DuckLabs team join AWS in early September, while the DuckDB project itself remains free and open source under the independent DuckDB Foundation. The acquisition does not include the DuckDB database, nor its related projects DuckLake and Quack. These will continue to be governed by the nonprofit DuckDB Foundation under the MIT license. Amazon emphasized this distinction in its statement, noting that the open-source project will remain free and open source.
