Apple CEO Tim Cook to step down, replaced by John Ternus

Published 30 August 2026

Tim Cook will step down as Apple's chief executive on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, ending a 15-year tenure that transformed the company into one of the world's most valuable. John Ternus, the senior vice president of hardware engineering, will assume the role, while Cook transitions to executive chairman. Cook, who took over from Steve Jobs in August 2011, oversaw a period of significant growth and stability. Under his leadership, Apple's market capitalization expanded from approximately $349 billion to around $4.6 trillion. The company's annual revenue more than quadrupled, and the number of active Apple devices grew from 200 million to over 2.5 billion.
