APC and ADC Clash Over Amaechi’s Medication Remarks

Published 5 October 2026

The All Progressives Congress criticized Rotimi Amaechi after the former Rivers State governor said rising medicine costs had made it difficult for his family to care for his mother before her death, with the African Democratic Congress condemning the party’s response as ridicule of a family’s grief. Amaechi made the remarks during a Friday interview on Channels Television. He linked the hardship to policies under President Bola Tinubu and said his family had struggled to buy his mother’s medication. The accounts of his remarks in the supplied reports do not independently establish the family’s financial circumstances or the medical details surrounding her death. In a statement issued Sunday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka mocked Amaechi’s reported financial difficulties and questioned his suitability to become vice president. Amaechi is the ADC’s vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. Morka referred to Amaechi’s earlier reported comment that his wife was supporting him financially, and said the presidency was not a “soup kitchen.
