French singer Amanda Lear has publicly accused Miley Cyrus of copying her 1978 song The Sphinx on Redlights, a track from Cyrus's tenth album, Bass Persuades, which was released on September 18, 2026. Lear, a French disco singer and former model, said fans first alerted her to similarities between the two songs. She then posted on Instagram, writing, "Thank you, Miley, for copying my song The Sphinx! I'm flattered!" alongside hashtags including ripoff and copycat. In an interview with Agence France-Presse, Lear said her record label, Universal, and the publishers of the track want acknowledgment of the plagiarism. "I've never been litigated, but my record label, Universal, and the publishers of the track, for which I wrote the lyrics, want acknowledgment of the plagiarism," Lear said. "I simply pointed out the situation by thanking Miley Cyrus and adding that I was flattered. I never threatened a lawsuit or retaliation.
