Airstrike on Sudan Gold Mine Kills Miners, Toll Disputed

Published 11 October 2026

An airstrike hit an artisanal gold mine in northern Sudan on Saturday, killing and injuring miners, according to survivor accounts and groups monitoring the incident. The aircraft and the force responsible have not been identified, and reports differ sharply on the number of people killed. Emergency Lawyers said at least 72 people died. Reuters reported that the group blamed Egypt’s air force but said it could not immediately verify the accusation. The Sudan Doctors Network gave a lower toll, reporting 13 miners killed and 28 injured. A miner quoted by Sudan Tribune said the number of dead was unknown and that at least 20 wounded people had been taken for treatment. The figures have not been independently confirmed in the supplied reporting. The medical network said the death toll could rise, citing serious injuries and limited access to health care. The different casualty estimates leave the scale of the loss uncertain. Survivor AbdelAziz Yousef told the Associated Press that an unidentified aircraft struck an artisanal mine in a mountainous area on Saturday morning. He said people were killed or wounded and others fled, fearing further attacks.
