Zcash Surges Past $1,300 on Governance Vote and Institutional Backing
Zcash's price surged dramatically over the past week, driven by a combination of institutional investment, a decisive community governance vote, and broader market dynamics. The privacy-focused cryptocurrency, ZEC, saw its value climb by approximately 15% to 23% in a 24-hour period, at one point approaching $1,400 and pushing its market capitalization above $23 billion. This rally occurred even as the wider cryptocurrency market experienced more modest gains and faced headwinds from a U.S. Federal Reserve interest rate hike and the failed passage of the CLARITY Act in the Senate. The surge was fueled by several converging factors. A key catalyst was the overwhelming approval of the Network Upgrade 7 (NU7) governance proposal by the Zcash community. Nearly 2.4 million ZEC participated in the vote, with 99.9% supporting a reduction in the target block time from 75 seconds to 25 seconds. This change is intended to improve transaction finality and network efficiency. Additionally, 98.9% of voters chose to maintain Zcash's Bitcoin-inspired halving schedule for block rewards.
